Hypertensive Emergency

If a person comes to the emergency with a Blood Pressure of 180/120 mmHg. By what percentage the blood pressure should be reduced over an hour?



  1. 10 %
  2. 25 %
  3. 30 %
  4. 50 %

It depends on the clinical situation- with in general NO set percentage being recommended (ie, VERY different if you have that BP for a symptomatic woman with symptomatic eclampsia= medical emergency vs no urgent need for any immediate reduction if that level of BP is chronic ... With no data showing any benefit in outcome for immediate vs more gradual BP reduction for the latter case over days to a few weeks instead of immediately in the ED ...).
